The Black Farmer® brand was born in 2004.
After years of travelling the world making TV films about food and drink I not only learned to appreciate great tasting, well made simple food, but whenever I returned to the UK after a journey abroad, I longed for a great British breakfast – sausages, bacon and eggs (whatever time of day or night!). Nothing in the world can beat it.
The downside was that I became aware of the very poor quality of the majority of sausages available in British supermarkets – some have as much filler as they do meat – and very poor quality meat at that. What’s more, as a British farmer I was astounded that there was no commitment to using British meat.
I made a promise to myself that I would create a fantastic sausage, that tasted wonderful and that had very high meat content using only 100% British meat. So four years ago that’s what I did!
What I found with most commercially produced sausages, was that because of the filler they use they are stodgy. I made a decision (which was seen as pretty radical at the time) to use a soya flour to bind the pork. This has the benefit of making a sausage where you can really taste the meat, is lighter to eat and, last but not least, makes The Black Farmer gluten free.
It wasn’t until we went on the road visiting food fairs and county shows to sample our products that I realized just how important the decision to be gluten free was. More and more people visiting our stand told me stories about how their wheat and gluten intolerance has meant giving up sausages altogether, as the only ones available were bland and generally only available by mail order from specialist suppliers!
This is too high a price to pay. So I can promise you that any product under The Black Farmer® brand will be gluten free and that they will appeal to every member of your family.
