You may know them as pigeon peas, but in Jamaica they’re called Gungo Peas. This small, round legume is grown in a pod and has a delicious nutty flavour.  Traditionally used in the Jamaican favourite – Rice and Peas.

Gungo Peas are a delicious Jamaican classic, completing its renowned national dish. They also contain several health benefits. Gungo Peas are a good source of protein, dietary fibre, and various vitamins: thiamin, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, copper, and manganese.

 

Below is the recipe for the delicious Jamaican Rice and Peas:

 

Ingredients:

  1. To get started, heat a medium pan that has a tight-fitting lid over high heat on the stove.
  2. Add 4 cups of liquid TOTAL to the pan, including the coconut milk, broth/liquid from peas and water.
  3. Next, add the peas, onion, garlic and all the spices, salt and pepper.
  4. Finally, add your rinsed rice. Stir one last time, reduce heat to low, cover with a tight-fitting lid and let cook for 15 minutes.
