THE MOTHER OF ALL CELEBRATIONS

Hello, everyone.

My mother was a charismatic woman – and a great cook – who came to England with the Windrush generation as the undisputed matriarch of the family. She brought everyone together, usually over great food and drink, and looked after my family like we were the centre of the world. Which, to her, we were.

So, it’s no surprise that I’m a fan of Mother’s Day (19 March), a chance to celebrate the leading ladies of our lives, whether that’s your mum, an aunt or simply a strong female you look up to – it doesn’t matter if you’re connected by blood or not.

Here, I round-up the thoughtful ways you can show her you care, from breakfast-in-bed to afternoon tea and simply great gifts. This Mother’s Day, make it all about her for once – she bloody deserves it.

Bring on breakfast in bed

This year’s #tablescape? The #trayscape! Simply put, it’s a beautifully-styled tray laden with a breakfast that’s befitting of queen, plus a few pretty flourishes just for Instagram! Keep it simple with a slice or two of Artisan Sourdough slathered with my Wiltshire Honey or Apricot and Blackcurrant Jam, or go all-out with a cooked breakfast of my award-winning Sausages – Jerk are my favourite, mixed with peppers, jalapeños and herbs – sweet and mild Smoked Streaky Bacon and rich and indulgent Black Pudding with a good dollop of ketchup. To keep things lighter and fresher, why not spoil her with creamy scrambled eggs and slices of Scottish Smoked Salmon squeezed over with lemon and a good grind of black pepper? Then, simply add a freshly-pressed linen napkin, polished vintage cutlery, antique salt and pepper pots, and a small glass vase with a flower or two from the garden to make your tray picture-perfect as you present it to mum.

Serve-up afternoon tea

Sure, you could take mum for afternoon tea at any number of fancy restaurants or hotels, but you can just as easily whip up your own at home without forking out a fortune. Plus, it’s the effort that counts, so mum will be even more impressed! If budget permits, browse a site like Etsy or eBay for a vintage teapot and matching cups, then fill with my very own English Breakfast Tea for fine but characterful flavour. You can either buy my ready-made Afternoon Tea – comprising a selection of filled sandwiches, freshly-baked sausage rolls and a collection of cakes – or build-your-own with the likes of Fruit Scones, Clotted Cream, Strawberry Jam and Lemon Sponge Cake for something more bespoke. Remember, we also have plenty of Gluten-Free choices, if required. As a final touch, why not source a tiered cake stand from a charity shop or similar for serving everything up like they would in a hotel? It’s all in the details…
